Every Sunday growing up, my mom summoned me to the kitchen, where she would be waiting with a pillow on the floor, two rattail combs, and a tub of hair grease. I would sit for hours on that pillow as she would cornrow my hair.
My signature style was five braids going all back. On occasion, she would throw in a zigzag plait or two if I was lucky or didn't start complaining (or crying!) as she combed through my knots. While some of us may have absolutely hated sitting in between Mom's knees on Sunday morning, nothing beat waking up on Monday with freshly laid braids for school.
Yes, you may have seen the style make its way down the runway at New York Fashion Week, but wearing cornrows is far from just a recent trend. Many black girls like myself grew up rocking the style and share those same Sunday memories in the kitchen.
