Scarlett From Nashville Cut Off Her Mermaid Mane For a Little Girl With Cancer

If you watch ABC's hit drama Nashville and you're a beauty girl (re: me), then you probably lust after Scarlett O'Connor's mermaid mane (I do). The crooning character, played by actress Clare Bowen, is about as girlie as they come. She usually rocks dresses, has luscious lashes, and is known for her waist-skimming hair. Said strands are often worn in an array of styles from tight curls to textured waves and even crown braids. Today, Clare revealed that she now has an androgynous-looking pixie.

She shared a stunning photo of her new chop taken by Joseph Llanes Photography on Facebook with the following caption:

Wanna know why I cut it all off?
When I was four years old, I asked my mother; "Are there heaters in Heaven?"
I had just been diagnosed with end stage nephroblastoma, after several visits to a GP who denied anything was wrong and dubbed my parents "paranoid." I'd overheard the doctors telling my family that the only hope of saving me, was an experimental treatment that might kill me anyway. But without it I had maybe two weeks left. The hospital was cold. I'd never felt air conditioning before.
Life in the White Palace (Granddad's nickname for hospital) meant I got to grow up surrounded by children just like me. We were mostly bald, all tubed, taped, bandaged up and stitched back together. We were all missing parts, some obvious like eyes or legs, others more hidden, like lungs and kidneys. Those who still could, tip-toed around like little fairies because chemotherapy had destroyed the muscles in our legs and it hurt to put our heels on the floor. But we were all together, so no one's appearance came into question. No one got laughed at or teased. We were all we knew.
And then I got really lucky. I survived, my hair grew back and I got strong again. I look relatively normal on the outside, but on the inside, I am still the same stitched back together little creature, in a world where people are judged so harshly for the way they look. It has always been completely incomprehensible to me. How can people think there's time for that?
I was really inspired when I heard a story about a little girl who said she couldn't be a princess because she didn't have long hair, and I wanted her, and others like her to know that's not what makes a princess, or a warrior, or a superhero. It's not what makes you beautiful either. It's your insides that count… even if you happen to be missing half of them.
Every scar tells a story, every baldhead, every dark circle, every prosthetic limb, and every reflection in a mirror that you might not recognize anymore. Look deeper than skin, hair, nails, and lips. You are who you are in your bones. That is where you have the potential to shine the brightest from. It is where your true beautiful self lives.
Thank you ABC network and particularly our creator, Callie Khouri for letting me change Scarlett's hair, and my team, family and friends for helping me make the decision. If it makes even one person think twice about judging another, then in some small way, the world is better.
Self-esteem takes a lot longer to grow back than hair.

Nephroblastoma is a rare kidney cancer that typically affects children, and Clare's story is incredibly inspiring. We are excited to see how she styles the sexy new 'do and how it affects Scarlett's plot line on the show.

Women Are Now Hiding Their Grown-Out Roots With Glitter

Rainbow roots are not for the faint of heart . . . nor for lapsed salon clientele. But if you are extremely lazy about getting your color touched up but still want to get in on festive hair color, glitter roots might be just the thing for you. All you need are a jar of leftover sparkles (we're sure you have some in your stash from Halloween!) and a bit of hair pomade. Part your hair as you desire, dab some product close to your hairline, and then sprinkle away! It doesn't matter what kind of glitter you use. Colorful, star-shaped, holographic - feel free to get creative.

While this would definitely be a fun trend to try for the holidays, we're not convinced it's something worth rocking on the regular. Those familiar with glitter cleanup know what a struggle it can be. Adding it into your strands will result in you finding little flecks of bling on your pillowcase for days, because multiple shampoo sessions probably won't get it all out. But if that's not holding you back, read on for more glitter roots inspiration. It looks especially adorable when paired with a funky hairstyle, like twin buns or pigtails.

The New Way to Create Beach Waves at the VS Show Will Blow Your Mind

Backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, there's always a ton of pink - the walls, the "pink carpet," the beauty products, the models' robes - but this season, there was a special addition. Every glam squad station was supplied with limited-edition hot-pink Sarah Potempa Beachwaver curling irons, the official hot-tool sponsor for the televised event. If you haven't heard of this genius tool, then it's time to catch up. The rotating curling iron was created by celebrity hairstylist and braid-lover Sarah Potempa. Sarah worked alongside lead stylist Akki to create bombshell waves with a twist on the gorgeous Angels.

"I did the show years ago, and I think in the very beginning it was a tighter wave," Sarah said of how the hair has changed. "Last year's show was really relaxed. And the year before that, they tried a natural wave. But to be honest, it's Victoria's Secret and the runway. They have to be sexy because [the models] have these insane outfits and wings on. Everything is larger than life."

She went on, "So this year, we are going back to that sexy glam, but it has that natural feel since we are changing up the way we're using [the curling iron]. And then, at the very end, we are adding that texture and movement."

Read a breakdown of the steps for how to get the Victoria's Secret 2015 show hair:

Step 1: Prep the hair with Victoria's Secret Mega-Lift Mousse ($14).

Step 2: Add hair extensions. "We are color matching and adding pieces," Sarah noted. "If you are going to re-create it [at home], you can do clip-ins. There are so many cool things you can do to turn your hair into this gorgeous, glam look."

Step 3: Roughly blow-dry the hair to keep texture in it. "If you use a round brush and blow it out too much, you're going to lose that natural roughness," Sarah explained. This will help the curls stay in place longer.

Step 4: After the blow-dry, add a tiny bit of cream and Victoria's Secret High-Shine Serum ($14) at the ends to give it some shine. "So it has that mix of texture and a gorgeous beach wave with shine at the end," Sarah added.

Step 5: Here's the best part: Akki showed Sarah a new way to use the Beachwaver to get a fresh curl. Clip a section of hair into the hot tool, leaving two inches loose. Press the arrow, curl it halfway up the hair, and take it out. Go back in where you left off in the middle, and curl it up close to the root. "It makes an uneven and flatter wave," Sarah said. "You can be creative with it and create different patterns. That was supercool for me because we are trying it a different way."

Step 6: If you have time before your event (or runway show!), roll the curled sections up, and clip them to your head to set them. Cover with a net to keep it from moving. When you remove the clips and shake out your hair, you'll have gorgeous Victoria's Secret bombshell waves!

Keep reading to watch Sarah and her team create stunning waves on Kendall Jenner, Lily Aldridge, and more models!

This Painted Dye Method Is the Easiest Way to Look Like a Mermaid

Earlier this Fall, everyone flipped for hand-pressed hair color because of how innovative the technique was (not to mention the beauty of the results!). But if you're a gal looking for glimmering rainbow strands that actually look like they organically grew from your scalp, you need to ask your colorist about fluid hair painting.

Developed by KL Christofferson, a colorist at Cheeky Strut Salon in Michigan, the method is like a more precise version of balayage. The client's hair is fanned out over a flat surface, and the expert carefully paints dye down the shaft of the hair in segments. The result is a soft, stunning gradient of color that appears completely natural. Get a closer look at the gorgeous examples and videos of the technique when you read on.
